Long Beach Desalination Project Receives More Federal Funding

Long Beach, CA - The United States Congress passed an omnibus appropriations bill for FY 2003 spending late Thursday evening, nearly five months into the Fiscal Year. Included in the omnibus appropriations measure is $1 million for the Long Beach Desalination Project. Also included, is $1.8 million for the Long Beach Water Reuse Project, aimed at expanding the City’s use of reclaimed water. President Bush is expected to sign the bill next week.

Poly Science Students To Represent Long Beach In Southern California Solar Boat Race

What: Teams of science students from eight Southern California high schools will compete against one another in a solar powered boat race. Each team of students, including one from Long Beach Polytechnic High School sponsored by the Long Beach Water Department, have built their solar powered boat from scratch. The competition is a three-day event sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The event promotes stewardship of resources and alternative technologies.

Long Beach Polytechnic Wins Second Place Overall, Sportsmanship Award, In Solar Boat Competition

Lake Skinner, CA - Long Beach Water Department-sponsored Polytechnic High School placed second overall in the first-ever Southern California solar boat competition, sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of Southern California. The team from Long Beach Poly also received the event's Sportsmanship Award, by far the most important award presented at the event. The event, to promote stewardship of resources and alternative technology, was won by Canyon High School of Anaheim.

Board Approves Small Water Rate Increase; First Time in Six Years

LONG BEACH, CA - The Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners unanimously approved the Long Beach Water Department's FY'04 Budget on Thursday, July 24. The $84.4 million budget, down from $89 million in FY'03, includes a small water-rate increase, the first rate increase in six years, bringing the average water bill back to where it was in 1997.

Coastal Commission Unanimously Approves Construction and Operation of Long Beach Prototype Desalination Facility

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA- After a lengthy discussion on issues associated with seawater desalination, including concerns related to privately owned desalination facilities, the California Coastal Commission voted unanimously to approve the Long Beach Water Department's project at its meeting Thursday in Huntington Beach, Ca.  The Commission found the project consistent with the relevant policies of the City's Local Coastal Plan (LCP), as well as the California Coastal Act. 

Long Beach Water Department Sends Emergency Drinking Water to Fire Victims in San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, CA - The Long Beach Water Department and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California have partnered with the American Red Cross to deliver an emergency supply of free drinking water to fire ravaged San Bernardino.
