Illegal Uses of Water

The following is a summary of the more common illegal uses of water in Long Beach.  To view the complete list, view our Water Conservation and Water Supply Shortage Plan.

It is prohibited to water landscape between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

  • Plus, you cannot water in a manner that results in unreasonable runoff or use irrigation equipment that is unreasonably water-inefficient, such as excessive over spray, excessive misting, over pressurization, misalignment or tilted spray heads, or other malfunction or out-of-adjustment condition;

The following are other Prohibited Uses of Water (PUoW) in Long Beach:

  • Not fixing breaks, leaks or other malfunctions in your plumbing system:
  • Wash down driveways and other outdoor impermeable surface areas unless using a water-conserving pressurized cleaning device.  (A water-conserving pressurized cleaning device shall discharge water at a minimum of 1,000 pounds per square inch or rated at using less than three (3) gallons of water per minute.  A simple spray nozzle does not qualify as a water-conserving pressurized cleaning device.)
  • Washing a vehicle with a hose when the hose does not have a water shut-off nozzle or device attached to it or allowing a hose to run continuously while washing a vehicle.
  • Any other water use resulting in excessive or unreasonable runoff.
  • Operating a fountain or other water feature that does not re-circulate the water.


And…

  1. Hotels and motels must give customers the option of choosing not to have towels and linens laundered daily, and this option must be prominently display in each bathroom and sleeping room;
  2. Restaurants must use pre-rinse heads having flow-rates of 1.5 gallons of water per minute or less
