Capital Projects

The Long Beach Water Department manages a complex network of water and sewer distribution systems throughout the city.  The Water Department is responsible for the maintenance and replacement of more than 915 miles of water pipeline and 765 miles of sewer pipeline.

In addition to managing a busy citywide water and sewer capital projects program, the Water Department has made and will continue to make investments in other types of capital projects meant to diversify the city’s water supply portfolio.  These alternative capital projects include expanding the city’s reclaimed water distribution system, construction and operation of the nation’s largest research & development seawater desalination facility and construction of beneficial conjunctive-use projects for the purpose of storing groundwater for use in dry years.
